The Wolfpack Wheelchair basketball team was founded in 2012 as part of the Naval Medical Center San Diego’s Health and Wellness Department, specifically, their Wounded, Ill and Injured Wellness Division.
The first Wolfpack team was comprised of active duty and veteran service members who sustained an amputation, spinal cord injury or had neurological or other orthopedic disorder affecting the lower body.
The team was developed as a therapeutic program designed to help players develop independence in life activities outside the hospital walls.
Though the team roster has evolved over the years to include civilians with similar physical disabilities, the team continues to be primarily a veteran-based team. However, regardless of the military or civilian status or how a player become a wheelchair basketball player, all will attest to the importance of participating in sports as a way to reduce anxiety, isolation and depression relating to a life changing injury.
Through the generosity and financial support of the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station ®, the Wolfpack team has had the opportunity to travel through out the nation and overseas, winning several titles, including the NWBA Division II Championship in 2018.
The Wolfpack and their sponsoring organization, Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, place a great deal of importance in participating in events throughout the San Diego and surrounding areas.
